Dave Grohl talks about the beauty of minimalism in music, but have you seen and heard the shit he's been doing in recent years? its far from minimalist, stripped down music.
Hey all you young douchebags, Dave Grohl was actually in another band before Foo Fighters, you should look into it.
All Star jam at the White House? in a suit and tie? This isn't rock n roll
Celebrity Jam with Paul McCartney at a benefit concert?
Riding Led Zeppelins coat tails at yet another all star jam?
Another celebrity gig, the Kennedy Center Honors from 2012. You can't host an all star concert without Dave Grohl having to be involved.
And once again the Kennedy Center Honors from 2008.
Nirvana forever changed the landscape of rock music. They rallied against what was the socially acceptable musical norms of the time. It was a breath of fresh air when music had become boring, predictable, commercial, stale, and way too overproduced and image-oriented.
Dave Grohl has become the very thing that Nirvana was against. He has become the U2 of this generation. Formulaic, adult comtemporary, garbage with absolutely no artistic merit or relevance, and much like U2 eager to seek the spotlight of any all star jam, or benefit concert that might happen along.
Ever since The Color and the Shape, the Foo Fighters have been making the exact same album over and over again.
Dave Grohl exists only to attend grammy ceremonies, walk red carpets, host cable television shows, perform at benefit concerts, play in all star jams, form superbands and release highly commercialized and formulaic music. He's not a rocker, he's not a musician. He's just a professional celebrity these days.
If Kurt Cobain was alive to see Dave Grohl play with The Muppets he'd a died of shame.
I was a teenager in the 80's when the whole Hair Metal scene was at it's peak. I personally hated hair metal, I was more of a metal head.
Me, sometime around 1987-88
Ultimate Guitar's website appropriately called Hair Metal, "Cookie cutter, fast food rock." I frankly find it offensive that they even used the word metal when naming thisgenre.
Let's hate on Hair Metal some more shall we?
In my opinion it was a great day when Nirvana finally came around to save rock music by putting a giant mirror to the face of Glam Metal so they could all realize just how ridiculous they looked, sounded, acted etc...
Old 80'S Monsters of Rock Commercial
All that emo crap thats out there now is music's modern day version of Hair Metal. Well I guess every generation has to have that one style of music that they'll feel ashamed about 30 years later.

Ok as a treat I'm posting the 1988 documentary film The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years. Directed by Penelope Spheeris, who would later go on to direct Waynes World, This film sums up what was going on back then better than anything else I could say.
If you have the time, I recommend watching it even for no other reason than to just make fun of it.
The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years - (1988) Full Movie
My first attempt at making a music/photo collage thing. Just figured I'd do something different. This list is not all inclusive, so just because something isn't on this list doesn't mean anything so don't read into it. This is just a list of some of my favorite David Gilmour solos. thats all.
Hey Guitard! Let's show some love for the bass players out there! Who are some of your favorite bass players? Any bass players you feel are over/underrated? Do you have an opinion on the pick vs fingers debate? Also, what is your favorite horror film circa 1980-1995? - Tony, California.
* Favorite/Most Underrated Bassist:
Paul McCartney
Paul was one of the most innovative bass players
ever. And half the stuff that is going on now is directly ripped off from his
Beatles period.-- John Lennon1
Paul McCartney was a guitar player who was basically demoted to playing bass, setting the standard for most all rock bass players to follow, haha. Seriously though, he is, in my opinion, the most underrated bass player in Rock history. He has laid down some of the most taseful and melodic bass line's ever.
Listen to the bass lines on, A Day in the Life. Just because he's in the rhythm section doesn't mean he has to resign himself to just playing in the background. He treats the bass as if it were a lead instrument, but its not overpowering the vocals or other instruments. His bass stands out but its not stepping on anyone else's toes and it doesn't take away from the song.
One of my favorite songs, I Want You (She's So Heavy) has some haunting, trippy ass bass on it.
Cliff Burton:(for me there was no Metallica after Cliff died)
Justin Chancellor [Tool]
And yeah, yeah, I didn't say any other names like, Victor Wooten, John Myung, Jaco Pastorious and all them other overly technical, jazzy dudes. I'm not saying it's not good, but thats just not my type of music.
Most Overrated Bass Player/s
Michael Anthony: While I don't condone bass playing that's so complex it interferes with melody and overall song structure, I also don't condone doing nothing but riding root notes all night long. Have some f*kking imagination. I'm not saying he's a bad bass player, just an overrated one.
Billy Sheehan: If you're gonna do nothing but play bass solos and tapping like Eddie Van Halen, then just play a f*kking guitar. I wouldn't listen to a bass player just because he's fast, no more than I would start a conversation with someone just because they could talk fast. Just because it might be fast doesn't mean it's necessarily interesting. Just because you might have a larger vocabulary than anyone else doesn't mean you have anything profound to say. Shit Ava is 4 1/2, still learning to master the English language and some of the shit she says is more interesting than anything most of the people I went to college with ever had to say.
Geddy Lee: I've never been a Rush fan and as far as bass playing goes, I don't believe in self-indulgency, and complexity simply for the sake of being complex.
The dude from Green Day
The dude from U2
Gene Simmons
Jason Newstead
Flea *now he's ok, but some people think he's a bass God, and I refuse to give him any more credit than just a simple, "He's Ok."*
I'm somewhere in the middle on this one but I lean more towards a "no pick" philosophy. While I believe the bass should be learned without a pick, I also believe in a kind of "different tools for different jobs," type of thing too. If you're trying to achieve a certain tone, a pick could be appropriate.
But when all is said and done at the end of the day, I believe fingers vs pick is ultimate the difference between a Bass Player and simply, somebody who just plays bass.
The Shining [1980]: By the time I was 9 or 10 I had already seen movies like Faces of Death, The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don't scare easily. In my leisure time I look at gory websites of murder scenes, car crashes, and war atrocities for fun. Ever been to www.rotten.com? that's kids stuff compared to the stuff I watch for fun.
Anyways, I don't get scared by movies, but I do get disturbed by them, and the only movie that ever came close to scaring me was "The Shining," When I first saw it I was about 10 years old and already a veteran of many horror films and I prided myself on being able to literally watch anything without getting scared or sick. The Shining gave me the creeps. I had to get thru it in two sittings. That had never happened before and hasn't happened since. As far as book adaptations go, maybe not the truest film depiction of a book ever done, but it's definitely a disturbing, great movie.
P.S. want some messed up trippy websites that are not for the squeamish?
I hate doing this but, I'm umemployed, broke, and mentally ill, uninsured and estranged from my wife and kids. Guitardedblog.com is announcing it's first Summer Fundraiser for the Mentally Guitarded
Since my last psychiatrist worked out so well I ended up in a mental hospital I decided to seek a second opinion. The new doctor immediately pointed out that taking prozac and seroquel can lead cause heart problems, and your heart can even just stop without warning. No wonder I was getting regular EKG's in the hospital. She doesn't agree with the last Dr's diagnoses of ADD/OCD and has said that she believes I am bipolar, with narcissistic tendencies, paranoia and severe social anxiety disorder. She says the prozac and adderall just make it worse. So once she looks at my EKG's just to make sure the last Dr. didn't screw up my heart, it's more seroquel and I'll have to take another mood stabalizer like lamictal or some other one, which she says will help stabalize my moods.
I hate being bi-polar. It's awesome.
I'm trying to find part time work doing something that plays to my strengths. I excel at jobs most people find tedious or boring. Paperwork, data entry, filing, research, computer stuff etc. Times are hard right now,
My main goals are keeping gas in the car, making my psychiatrist visits, and staying on my meds, finding work. I've sold my guitar, and even tried to sell my wedding ring and phone but nobody was buying. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and struggle and fight and sacrifice to make ends meet, but I'm in kinda running a "hurry up offense," to get on my feet so I can get back home to my wife and kids as soon as possible.
All I'm asking for is just a random act of kindness to help give me the momentum I need to get out of this rough patch. With a little boost, I can do the rest of the work myself.
I have nothing to offer in return except my gratitude, and my commitment to keep this blog as entertaining as possible.
Ok enough of that. I recorded a couple "Esoteric Guitar Songs of the Week," before I sold the guitar. I'll post one shortly.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program... Thanks
Now I don't know much about this song except that the dude playing it in the movie is called Chris Thomas King and it sounds bad ass the way he plays it. He is a good guitar player.
Ok so here's my video of the week for your educational value or entertainment, or if you just want something to make fun of.
Watch me struggle to keep my shit together long enough to make this stupid video. I'm really sure what I was trying to do here except prove to the world, I own a guitar, I have moderate to average playing ability, I have the technology to... record myself playing guitar, I like Pink Floyd, I have a bad habit of completely loosing my train of thought mid-sentence, I probably have no business even messing around with my stupid bog and should probably have internet access taken away from me, and quite possibly consider institutionalization, haha, literally nobody is reading this.
