What the Hell Happened to Syd Barrett?

Insanity: A perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world. - R.D. Laing [psychiatrist]

he thought it was all a bit of fun really, it was just something he'd enjoyed. He never wrote a piece of music to make money, he wrote it because it was in his head and it was enjoyable to do so. - Rosemary Breen, Syd's Sister.

"All I ever wanted to do as a kid [was] play guitar properly and jump around, but too many people got in the way." - Syd Barrett

Today I want to talk about what happened to Syd Barrett and why it's important today. Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd. He named the band after two obscure blues men Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. In 1968 he was dismissed over his increasingly erratic behavior and heavy drug use.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time going over Barrett's past. This is not a biography. I will post some links and sources for further reading into Barrett's life.
Barrett in the Early 90's

After scoring a couple singles with The Floyd that entered the charts, he released two solo albums before eventually withdrawing completely from the public view in 1974 at the age of 28, Barrett was done with being Syd and went back to his given name Roger. He lived his life simply, spending his time painting and gardening. He did not like being reminded about his past as a musician and the other members of Pink Floyd had no direct contact with him. In 1992 Atlantic Records even offered him 75,000 British Pounds to record anything he wanted, in his home if necessary. Although its rumored that his family did consider the offer, Barrett simply declined flat out.

Some dickhead fan, knocks on Syd Barrett's door. Barrett spent a lot of his time dealing with people constantly knocking on his door, camping out in front of his house. and following him around town. It is said that he found it quite strange that people still cared about the musical recordings he made so many years ago.

Since Syd Barrett never receved an official diagnosis during his lifetime, speculation still persists over what the hell happened to him. Lots of posthumous diagnoses have been suggested ranging from Aspergers, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and just plain old acid burnout. I'm not a big fan of posthumous diagnoses, I just don't think they are effective, but just this once, I'll put my usual hesitations aside.

Barrett in 1975 crashing the Wish You Were recording sessions at Abbey Road Studios. Rick Wright said when he saw him, 'He kept standing up and brushing his teeth, putting his toothbrush away and sitting down. Then at one point he stood up and said, 'Right, when do I put my guitar on?' And of course he didn't have a guitar with him'

...he [Syd] had psychiatric problems, and was actually in a sanitorium. He doesn't have any involvement with anything or anybody. He is a recluse... I see him very rarely. I mean, I know where he is, but he doesn't want to be bothered; he just sits there on his own, watching television all day and getting fat. That's what he does -  Bryan Morrison (former Pink Floyd manager and publisher)

"In my opinion, his nervous breakdown would have happened anyway. It was a deep-rooted thing. But I'll say the psychedelic experience might well have acted as a catalyst. Still, I just don't think he could deal with the vision of success and all the things that went with it.-  David Gilmour,
Pink Floyd

...acid to a large extent can exacerbate that collection of symptoms we put together loosely described as schizophrenia...There is no doubt that Syd was schizophrenic and that he was taking those drugs at the same time. - Roger Waters,
Pink Floyd

I believe that Acid had a huge part to play in it...99.9% sure. - Rick Wright, Pink Floyd

He wasn't mentally ill in any way, he was different, eccentric, his mind and ideas were simply different from the considered norm. Thank goodness we are not all the same, we need people like Syd to add colour to our lives. - Rosemary Breen, Barrett's sister.

For me, to say Barrett simply went crazy, or was an acid casualty, is such an extremely simplistic explanation that it falls short of explaining what really happened.

Aspergers Syndrome [link to wikipedia], is an autism spectrum disorder and its characterized by extreme difficulties in socical interactions and repetitive patterns of behavior.  However, this is rare and it starts in childhood and stays consistent through life. In the books, "A Saucerfull of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey," and "A Very Irregular Head: The Life of Syd Barrett," it is made very clear by his friends and family that he was a very upbeat and charming kid. It is well documented by his friends and band mates that his decline didn't start until the mid/late 1960's shortly before his departure from Pink Floyd in the beginning of 1968. Post Floyd Barrett has been called, "mad," "paranoid" and "crazed."

Bipolar Disorder [link to wikipedia]  doesn't seem to fit either. Being Bipolar myself, I don't see anything resembling bipolar when reading the books and numerous interviews that have been conducted amongst his friends and bandmates. What seems to have happened with Barrett is a slow steady decline into madness versus the highs and lows that characterize bipolar disorder. I would imagine that someone in his position that was bipolar would've seen several attempt to re-enter music throughout the 70's and 80's during high periods.

Schizophrenia [link to wikipedia] seems to manifest in the late teens or early twenties. Starting with minor oddities and quirks it progresses into a full blown breakdown of the thought processes. It's characterized hallucinations/delusions, disorganized speech/thinking, difficulties working and extreme social isolation. These symptoms are wide ranging and there are many expressions of them in this broad spectrum of schizophrenia.

This is the generally accepted view by those who knew him and also by mental health professionals today. The University of California San Francisco Med School even did a lecture on changes in people developing schizophrenia, and used Barrett as an example.

This would seem to fit Barrett however his mental decline doesn't seem to come into question until he began his marathon like use of LSD.

What I think really happened was that Barrett suffered from an LSD-induced Schizophrenic Psychosis that was exacerbated by a genetic predisposition to mental illness and the pressures of being suddenly thrown into Pop stardom, which he was completely unprepared for.

An LSD induced schizophrenic psychosis, can happened after taking acid one time or after taking it multiple times.

Long term LSD use predisposes the user to psychotic personality changes and even to schizophrenic psychotic symptoms. However, distinguishing between psychotic symptoms related to LSD use and other pre-existing mental disorders is very difficult - Sami Pirkola, Senior Research Scientist, National Public Health Institute.

My Schizophrenic Psychotic view differs from the classic schizophrenia diagnosis in that I don't believe he had it before he started taking drugs. I believe his heavy use of LSD triggered a Psychotic State [link to wikipedia] or a loss of contact with reality. And this state may have lasted for several years until he completely withdrew from the public view in 1974. After this psychosis from extremely heavy LSD use went away he was left a solitary figure resembling more a schizophrenic who was extremely reclusive, extremely intent not to be around anybody that reminded him of his past and someone extremely paranoid and suspicious of people in general as his sister Rosemary once said in an interview after Syd's death.

He did however become more selective, when he was younger everyone was his friend, after the Floyd I think there was lots of issues and it made him much more wary of human contact. Not everyone had good motives towards him; therefore I think he became quite suspicious of people.- Rosemary Breen

    Barrett, 2002

Barrett, it is reported, spend upwards of 8 years in a mental institution sometime after went into his self-imposed exile. However, he was never given an official diagnosis. This could be due to the fact that the full spectrum of schizophrenia and the affects of LSD on mental conditions was not widely understood at that time. We have a much better understanding of that now, especially with drugs like crystal meth and bath salts.

It's Important to see that we may take certain drugs today, thinking there will be no long term consequences but that doesn't mean that there won't be any 10-20 years from now. I'm including all drugs, legal and illegal, but mostly illegal.

IN CONCLUSION

Let me try to explain everything so far:

It's ultimately impossible to know whether Syd Barrett already had schizophrenia in him or if it was the LSD that created it.  What we do know is that Syd Barrett had everything going for him and what did he get at the end of it all?

BOY YOU SAID IT WILLY WONKA!

It's Gonna Suck When Paul McCartney Dies

"My grandkids always beat me at Rock Band. And I say, Listen, you may beat me at Rock Band, but I made the original records, so shut up." - Paul McCartney

That'll probably be the headline on all the newspapers when Paul McCartney dies. I'm not looking forward to this for several reasons. Of course there's the whole musical genius thing, but the main reason I'm not looking forward to it is because I believe the media is going to focus on all the wrong aspects about his life.  That's what I want to write about today.

I dread the deaths of certain super celebrities. Not because i care about them but because of all the shit I have to endure on television when one of them dies. And the bigger the personality, the worse it is
. - George Carlin

When Paul McCartney dies, It'll be worse than when Michael Jackson or Princess Diana died. We're gonna have to hear Hey Jude and Yesterday (both overrated in my opinion) non stop while they play constant retrospectives and video clip and photo montages. They'll probably even do man on the street interviews asking people what they think about Paul McCartney and his musical legacy.

Then of course you'll have to hear every asshole newscaster saying stupid fucking cliches like "Well I guess he's playing in heaven with John and George now." That's probably gonna annoy me more than anything else. It's gonna be all over your Facebook and Twitter pages and you won't be able to escape it.
This is the just the first stage of how I envision the media fucking this whole thing up when Paul McCartney dies. When they're not busy talking in cliches everyone on TV will be focusing on all the wrong aspects of his life. CNN will have nonstop 24 hour coverage.
Every moment of the funeral will be covered worldwide. Old, fat dirty hippies will be lined the streets in tears trying to get a view of his casket. Some old fucking hag will be interviewed and she'll go on and on about how she saw The Beatles in Shea Stadium or Candlestick Park and how even tho you couldn't hear shit it was so amazing. Every other person they interview will basically say the same thing.
They will talk about how Paul McCartney was a vegetarian and how he was always all over the tabloids because he was getting married over and over again after Linda McCartney died. They'll show that one lady with the one leg.

They will also probably keep referring to his collaboration with Michael Jackson and they'll talk over a clip from that music video they did for "Say Say Say," which will play every time they come back from commercial or while they're doing an interview with some guy who's supposed to be an expert on how Paul McCartney dying will affect society.
They will also talk about how Paul McCartney lost the publishing rights to The Beatles's songs because he was outbid by Michael Jackson. Then they'll probably make some reference to the earlier cliche with something as equally stupid as, "Now they can make music videos and outbid each other in heaven," or some shit like that.
AT THIS POINT, OVERCOME BY FRUSTRATION AND OUTRAGE I WILL PROBABLY DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS...

WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD FOCUS ON INSTEAD
I woke up one morning with a tune in my head ... I went to the piano and found the chords to it ... It just came to me in a dream" - Paul McCartney on writing Yesterday

1. Musical Genius: Paul McCartney plays many instruments, a few of which are; guitar, bass guitar, piano, harmonica, recorder, banjo, mandolin, and drums, and he plays them good too.

He wrote Yesterday in his sleep, literally. While some of you are lucky if you don't piss your pants while you're sleeping, this motherfucker is writing hit songs. That's some next level shit right there.

He's arguably the most underrated, melodic and greatest rock bass player ever. And even at 70 he still sings the early Beatles in the same key they were originally recorded in. To still have kind of vocal range after 50 years is truly impressive.

2.  Business Genius: Paul McCartney's company MPL Communications owns over 25,000 copyrights and the publishing rights to  the musicals Guys and Dolls, A Chorus Line, Annie and Grease. It also owns the publishing rights for Buddy Holly, and Carl Perkins and many other artists.

3. Criminal Past/Bad Boy: McCartney has been arrested four times for weed and even spent 8 days in jail in Japan after he tried to smuggle in his suitcase full of weed. For someone with as big of a rep as a vegetarian and humanist and all around nice guy, people forget that this used to be someone who had no problems being arrested, and spending time in jail.

4. SNL: The Chris Farley Show: Still one of my favorite moments from SNL. I don't know how many people still remember this. It's a must watch. Its so funny until he asks the last question which is probably one of the greatest questions I think has ever been asked of a Beatle. I'm sure it was meant as a joke but I don't think they realized just how profound that question was.

Chris Farley: ...um, you did that album Abbey Road, and at the very end of the song, it would.. the song goes, "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make"? You.. you remember that?
Paul McCartney: Yes.
Chris Farley: Uh.. is that true?
Paul McCartney: Yes, Chris. In my experience, it is. I find, the more you give, the more you get.

5. What Could've Been: There was at least one close call to a Beatles reunion. In 1976 when Lorne Michaels made a joke on SNL, offering the Beatles $3000 for a reunion. It may have been just a joke, but Lennon and McCartney almost took him up on the offer. The two were watching the show and were thinking about going down to the SNL studios, but at the last minute decided against it, citing the fact they hadn't played together in public for many years and whether or not they could've made it to the NBC studios in time.

Two of Us is a low budget but very interesting movie that fictitiously speculates about how that whole story might have gone down.

Link to IMDB's entry for Two of Us (2000)

In Conclusion

It will be a sad day when Paul McCartney dies without already having the media there to turn into a circus.

I don't even wanna think about whats going to happen with Mick Jagger dies.

All Rock Stars Should Take Heroin

Heroin - A drug that helps you to escape reality, while making it much harder to cope when you are recaptured. - Nikki Sixx, The Heroin Diaries

I hate to break this to you, but apparently...some rock stars are actually on HEROIN!

I don't wanna advocate heroin use, but I do want to write about why so many rock stars use heroin, and make this modern day deal with the devil.

You know a Rock Star even offered me Heroin once! I was lucky enough to actually capture it on video too. Here is is:

Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Layne Staley, Shannon Hoon, Andrew Wood, Sid Vicious, Bradley Nowell...all dead junkies.

Others like, Jerry Garcia, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Nikki Sixx, Dave Navarro, Keith Richards, Duff McKagan, and basically all of the Red Hot Chili Peppers have had well documented histories with the drug. Even John Lennon had a brief period where he dabbled in Heroin. If you don't believe me here's a link to an article on The Daily Mail about it

My favorite Heroin Addict is former Guns N Roses drummer Steven Adler.

Do you fucking realize how much drugs you have to do to get kicked out of GUNS AND FUCKING ROSES!!!

SO WHY DO SO MANY ROCK STARS TAKE HEROIN?

  1. IT MAKES YOU LOOK COOL. If you're a multimillionaire, jet-setting rock star who travels the world and is on magazines, television, & radio, there's not much you can do to get that coveted "bad boy" image that girls go wild about. Flirting with death on a daily basis is the the ultimate bad boy thing to do.

To be a rock star and a junkie is to rebel against society itself, and Rock n Roll is all about rebellion.

2. IT'S LEARNED BEHAVIOR.

The Rockers of 60's admired the old Blues & Jazz musicians that came before them who used heroin. Later generations of rockers admired and wanted to be like those 60's musicians and so on.

3. IT HELPS CREATIVITY. the old poets like Rimbaud, Keats, Shelly, Byron, Coleridge all experimented with Opiates and other substances.

“The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.”- William Blake

The old romantic poets believed that to live a nice comfortable life was fundamentally antagonistic to making real art.

It [heroin] slows life down and turns off the overrintellectualizing part of your brain - Steven Tyler

Creativity requires the absence of rational thought and civilized life is nothing, if not rational.

If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite - William Blake

4. IT'S HELPFUL. For a rock star who has a management team to handle every aspect of life that the rest of us deal with everyday like, food, clothes, bills, travel arrangements, the junkie rockstar is as far removed from the real world as the corner homeless junkie bum.

"the drug you do if you're in a fuckin' four-star hotel and you can order all the goddamn room service that you want and you can just lay in bed and drool all over yourself because you've got a million bucks in the bank. That's the drug you want to do if you want to be a kid forever." - Courtney Love on Heroin

If you're on the road playing to stadiums of sold out raving and drooling fans every night for two hours, heroin is there to even you out and calm you down.

When you have the boredom of waiting 22 hours everyday in hotels, airports, and buses for the only two hours of excitement of your day, Heroin is there help with that boredom.

When your entire life on tour is devoid of privacy because everybody wants something from you. Heroin is there to remove you from the world. It draws you into yourself.

And after touring for months or even years. Do you think its easy to suddenly go to a quiet, "normal" life at home with no excitement. Well heroin is there to help with that boredom too.

Whether you're a janitor, teacher, executive or stock broker, whatever your job may be, we all have our substances to help us manage, whether its a cold beer, a joint, a martini, a margarita or a line of coke.

The intense life of a rock star is not ordinary. Therefore no ordinary drug will do. Especially when money is no object.

Besides, I think rock music was at its most outrageous, most creative and innovative during the 60's and 70's when drug use was at it's height and rockers were dropping dead left and right.

The beatles, rolling stones, aerosmith, the eagles, 90's grunge, all made their best music on drugs.

Trent Reznor is Halfway to an EGOT: And Other Reasons Why He Sucks

In 1994, Nine Inch Nails was making music that was dark, subversive, disturbing, intense, sexy and maddening. Their live shows were unpredictable, and sometimes even felt a little dangerous.

I saw two NIN shows in 1994. (I've seen 3 total) One small venue with Type O Negative and the "Lesbian Spice Girls" that were officially known as Fem2Fem.  And one large stadium show with a relatively unknown Marilyn Manson and the freaks of The Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. Both shows were great.

Trent Reznor Breaking Shit on Stage

Trent Reznor broke keyboards, repeatedly pushed and shoved  his band members around on stage while they were playing, and even threw a keyboard at the drummer during a song, bringing down the entire drum kit in the process. A short intermission immediately followed while they set back up again. Fans assaulted each other and even lit a MASSIVE bonfire on the arena floor. I've seen fires lit at concerts before but I've never seen one this big before, or since.

Stories also circulated around town about how NIN had a whole floor of a local hotel room booked and people reported seeing strange sights like naked women walking the halls on all fours with dog collars and ball gags.

 Closer Music Video

Going to a concert and not knowing exactly what's going to happen, or even if you're going to make it out safely. Danger, loud fast music, voilence, weird sex shit. Music video's with severed pigs heads, monkeys on crosses, naked bald bitches, S&M. That's what rock music is all about.

And this one time at a NIN show...Someone even offered me DRUGS! I even took a video of it (see below)

But these days Trent Reznor should probably lay off the fatty foods.

If you think NIN is still cool these days then you are just...

If you're gonna sit there and tell me that Trent Reznor still rocks then this is the reaction you're going to get from me.

And you will also get this reaction from me

The Downward Spiral ended being a very prophetic name for Trent Reznor's last great NIN album, because ever since he has taken a downward spiral into unremarkable electionic lameness.

Trent Reznor has always been the "DIY" guy of rock music but for years now all the crap I've been hearing just sounds like something any hipster douche with Pro Tools and a laptop can do.

I don't care how many Oscars Trent Reznor wins. The music has lost his edge. It's boring adult contemporary, irrelevant, that no longer has a powerful message or artistic relevance. It's went from cutting edge Electronic/Industrial Metal to middle aged synthpop.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT THIS GUY?

IS HALFWAY TO A FUCKING EGOT?

CASE CLOSED. SIR YOU HAVE FAILED TO ROCK!

I wonder what he will end up doing to get that EGOT?

Head Like a Hole: THE MUSICAL!

Trent.0 : Trent Reznor's internet and shitty band video clip tv show!

Actually I would probably watch that show

IN CONCLUSION,

I guess when you get middle aged, start getting a little fat, stop doing drugs, start winning Oscars and start making a little money, what happens to you is the one thing that seems to kill most rock stars eventually...

and no I'm not talking about plane crashes.

I'm talking about getting civilized. The Trent Reznor of NIN thru 1994 was a young, angry dude who just didn't give a fuck about anything.

What does an almost 50 year old man with money, and Oscars and Grammy's have to possibly be angry about?

Young, hungry, broke, and pissed off seems to be the formula for great rock and roll. And why is that? Because the majority of the Rock and Roll audience is young, hungry, broke and pissed off. You loose that and you loose touch with your fans.
